The Esports City League, the most important circuit of amateur electronic sports competitions linked to DreamHack Spain, was held this weekend at the Poliesportiu of Andorra, the first event to have professional participation organized in the country and succeeded in positioning the Principality as a reference in the hosting of these competitions, by scheduling in a single weekend an International tournament and a further nine competitions.
In this first edition, fans of electronic sports were able to enjoy the finals of the Esports City League Andorra or Cibertitans, as well as videogame competitions in Clash Royale, Rocket League or Formula 1. A whole host of tournaments with prizes valued in over 25.000 euros that in addition, gave the opportunity to new competitors from a variety of different disciplines. Also taking place were presentations, concerts and conferences related to the sector.
Thanks to the tournaments, which were streamed on the channels of the Esports City League official ambassadors, on Saturday alone over 250.000 people worldwide were able to enjoy the event.
The warm welcome received at the Esports City Fest Andorra both by physical visitors, around 3000 people according to the organization, as well as digital ones, has allowed the Principality to position itself as a reference in an industry that continues to grow. According to data by the consultant Newzoo, the sector annually moves around 19.6 billion dollars and, around the world, there are close to 3.2 billion players.
On Andorra´s side participants were ACA e-Sports, What You Play, FC Andorra, Assegur, Motormatch, and videogame developers based in Andorra such as Cibertitans and Golden Haven Games. The event also welcomed the collaboration of Andorra Turisme, the Comú of Andorra la Vella, CityXerpa and Pyrenees/Epizen.
The director of Andorra Business, Judit Hidalgo, showed her satisfaction “for the response received, not only by players and national teams, but also by businesses who have all asked for a new edition. With the e-Sports City Fest Andorra we have positioned our electronic sports sector on the international stage. The next step will be in July in Valencia where one of the most important European events will take place and where Andorra´s ecosystem will again be present thanks to the agreement signed with Encom”.
Furthermore, with the firm intention of promoting another of the main points of the strategic plan, that of economic development and the Principality´s electronic sports sector, the agreement with Encom also includes the hosting of business events, the Esports City Talks Andorra, that will be held in the third part of 2023. This event, open to Andorran and international companies in the sector, will include presentations and business, educational and technological innovation conferences.
The CEO of Encom and Director of DreamHack Spain, Arturo Castelló, highlighted that “the gamer community has proven to be more active than ever thanks to their continued interest in events like this one. That on Saturday alone 250.000 people speaking 8 different languages followed the festival live on one of the official channels is of great pride to us. Overall, Andorra has proven to be a destination of interest for all the fans in the world of videogames and youth culture”.
The Esports City League
The Esports City League is the first amateur e-sports league on the Iberian peninsula. This competition gathers fans of videogames in taking part in tournaments of their favorite games. The finalists will enjoy the experience of professional competition by being invited to the finals at DreamHack Spain.
