The Andorran primary school of Andorra la Vella hosted the project TerMITs provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It was the first scholar building with sensors integrated outside a MIT laboratory. The project was carried out within the framework of co-operation between the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the ActuaTech Foundation, which whom the MIT develops research and innovation projects for Andorra.
The Minister of Education and Higher Education Eric Jover, told this project is part of the educational reform based on learning skills in force at the Andorran schools. The pilot program allows students to interact with new technologies to apply them to the environment knowledge in general. Jover announced that once positive conclusions from this test were drawn, It could be exported to other centers, and even to other educational systems.
According to Luís Alonso, coordinator of the MIT, the project consists in the installation of 80 sensors installed called TerMITs, located in four classrooms and in the hallway outside the 3rd floor of the school, which records information such as temperature, CO2 level, movements, or the intensity of the light, among other parameters. The aim is for students to see how human behaviour has a direct impact on energy consumption and be aware of the importance of implementing measures in favor of energy efficiency.
The director of the school, Bruno Bartholomé praised the project as an educational experience of value, since students can experience and learn cutting-edge technology in their everyday application.
